Our Festival moments

As the Edinburgh Festivals draw to a close, we asked the Scotch Whisky Experience team to tell us about the memorable or special experiences they had during the busy, beautiful, bustling month of August. Here’s what they told us…

Just a minute

We were excited to hear a cheeky recommendation from stand-up comedian Fred Macaulay on the Fringe episode of Just a Minute! He got in with 3 seconds to go, and without hesitation or deviation he used those precious seconds to sing our praises. UK readers can catch up on the episode here until 27th September – we’re mentioned at around 26:00!

Tattoo flyover 2017

Flying high

One of the key themes of this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo was a celebration of the Royal air force, and it was commemorated in serious style through some spectacular flyovers. Suman, a member of our Technical team, captured this incredible Typhoon flyover one evening standing outside the Scotch Whisky Experience – what a sight!

Catch up on our blog post on why the Tattoo is such an unmissable experience here.

A birthday to remember

We welcomed nearly 6,000 people on our ever-popular Tattoo dining packages this year, and each night our Events and Hospitality teams worked to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone who attended. A particularly special evening was remembered by Alison, part of the team who conducts whisky tastings in the Castlehill Room: “One night it turned out to be a number of guests’ birthdays, so the Shetland Fiddlers treated them to a beautiful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ on their fiddles, before they went up to see the full Tattoo performance. It was just amazing!”

The perfect reward

Let’s not forget that the performers who make Edinburgh such an incredible experience during August need some downtime as well! Rosie, who manages The Scotch Whisky Experience pages on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, had a message exchange with two comedians at the beginning of August – “They wanted to know about the different whisky tours we offered, as they were trying to choose an experience that would be the perfect reward for having done a whole month of performances. It’s lovely to hear people’s reasons for visiting us – whether they’re just looking to find out more about Scotch whisky, or they’re planning a treat or celebration, we love to help!”

Whisky & Chocolate 2

Whisky and water

During July we ran a competition for members of the team to submit their ideas for the Scotch Whisky Experience blog, and Visitor Assistant Heather was one of our winners for her blog post on matching Scotch whisky and cornershop chocolate. She put her prize towards a trip up one of Edinburgh’s picturesque canals on a particularly unique Fringe show – the Scotch Egg Club Presents: Whisky on Water. Ticket holders were treated to various whisky and food pairings, whilst enjoying the world go by on a warm August evening. She even got to drive the barge!

Star struck

Edinburgh during August is the perfect time for star-spotting, even if sometimes you don’t always realise who you’re rubbing shoulders with until the last minute. Head of Marketing Julie Trevisan Hunter had one such experience: “We were queuing for a show late one night, and got chatting to a couple about the shows they’d seen and how their festival was going. At one point a woman approached us and said very nervously to the man we were standing with that she just loved Black Books and was a huge fan. It turns out we’d be standing chatting to Dylan Moran – Fringe veteran and comedy star of multiple shows, films and sitcoms! Only in Edinburgh…”

Christine’s a winner!

We were proud to support Fringe singer Christine Bovill for her run of shows at this year’s Fringe, rekindling the ‘auld alliance’ between Scotland and France. Known for her exquisite voice and beautiful renditions of classic chanson, Christine’s shows ‘Piaf’ and ‘Paris’ sold out across all performances, received multiple five-star reviews. She was even awarded the Mervyn Stutter Spirit of the Fringe award for 2017!
